Practitioner Study (7)
I am reviewing the work "Rooster" by Christopher Bruce. This piece is a "celebratory work" (http://palace.co, 2017), where "One of the main themes is the male chauvinism." (http ://palace.co, 2017). It is a very light-hearted and fun piece, where the movements represent the "attitudes of the times" (http://palace.co, 2017). The movement in the piece is reflecting the 'swing' style that was popular in the 1960s. This also complements the music, with the famous band, The Rolling Stones. There's a repetition of jazz techniques and typical 'disco' moves which help to bring the fun. In Rooster, the men energetically perform the 'rooster strut', which is a bird-like movement. There is also the use of jumps, which are done to mimic the lyrics in the songs. He wanted to capture the audience with the specific neck jut forward to highlight the idea of men showing off in society.
There's a difference in the movement style between Rooster, and Ghost dances, a piece I studied previously. The movement styles are different, because Ghost Dances has a very contemporary/classical essence to represent the mistreatment and lack of human rights amongst the worlds. However, Rooster is more about the social attitudes of the 60s, with the relationships between men and women being a "sexual war" (www.studymode.com,n.d.). There are contrasting dynamics between the two pieces, with different tones and moods created by them. However, both pieces work closely with the music. Ghost dances uses traditional folk music, with the movement being folk inspired. Similarly, the pop music used in Rooster is complemented with more modern dance.
"Detail with which he physically represents" and the "crisp athleticism", (http://palace.co, 2017). Bruce wanted to make the movement match the iconic essence of the music used, so uses lots of unique movements that help to reflect what the piece is about. I also want to reflect the message and tone of my piece through movement motifs, and repeating them, which I have mentioned in other blogs.
