Evaluation (9)

In the beginning, I wanted to create a piece that would reflect the violence and anguish that exists in the world and trying to find peace amongst the violence through movement. I wanted to reflect artwork, The Flower Thrower by Banksy through movement by using the contrast that is used in the artwork. For example, having shifts of different dynamics. I think this has also helped to create an unsettling tone to the piece as it shifts often, helping to create an atmosphere of war and the unsettling nature that it brings. Through the creative process, I have been going back to these initial thoughts throughout the process, so the piece is well-rounded.  I think in future, I will focus more on the emotions that are brought out from the artwork and transfer them into my piece, instead of focusing on the dynamic contrast. This would overall help to reflect the more heartbreak and trauma that can come from war.  Now I am at the end of this process, I have found the importance of ref...

Personal Development Reflection (8)

At the moment, I have created all my movement material so that I can start cleaning my piece. I'm going to focus timings, knowing when to do movements faster or slower so they go with the music. This is significant as it can help to add to the tension of my piece, with the growing efforts of finding peace amongst violence. I have researched in previous blogs about how Christopher Bruce 'works closely with the music in order to help portray the stimulus'. That is why its important to focus on specific timings, to overall match the dynamic and mood of my music and piece. In previous research, I found that 'music can help to highlight the social issues that occur and can help to reflect that in a piece'. (Foyer, 2015).  I have taken into consideration the different factors of choreography and carried out research to look deeper into them. I looked at the creation of different pieces choreographed by my chosen practitioner, and found how Christopher Bruce, 'complem...

Practitioner Study (7)

Image
I am reviewing the work "Rooster" by Christopher Bruce. This piece is a "celebratory work" (http://palace.co, 2017) , where  "One of the main themes is the male chauvinism." (http ://palace.co, 2017) . It is a ver y light-hearted and fun piece , where the movements represent the "attitudes of the times" ( http://palace.co , 2017). The movement in the piece is reflecting the 'swing' style that was popular in the 1960s. This also complements the music, with the famous band, The Rolling Stones . There's a repetition of jazz techniques and typical 'disco' moves which help to bring the fun.   In Rooster, the men energetically perform  the 'rooster strut', which is a bird-like movement. There is also the use of jumps, which are done to mimic the lyrics in the songs. He wanted to capture the audience with the specific neck jut forward to highlight the idea of men showing off in  society .     There's a difference in th...

Reflection Of My Choreographic Processes So Far (6)

I am in the stages of my choreography where I'm just under halfway through creating movement. So far, I have created 2 sections of my dance, one having a fast-paced, strong dynamic, to reflect the idea of anger and violence. Contrastingly, I have created my second section, which is more of a neoclassical, softer dynamic to highlight the fight for tranquillity amongst countries at war. This is to represent how my stimulus is a sign of opposition, in the way that there is a violent-looking figure throwing flowers. It has been difficult to connect these two sections together when creating transitions that fit. At the moment, I feel like my piece is less of a dance, but more 2 sections put together with music. To overcome this, I want to think carefully about creating transitions that complement the music, so it brings the two sections together smoothly. This will help it flow better and overall help my piece to feel more like a dance.  My teacher has given me feedback, and said how th...

Practitioner Study - Ghost Dances (5)

Image
I have chosen to study the piece, Ghost Dances, by Christopher Bruce. This piece is about people who have died, re-enacting specific moments in their lives. Bruce has used contrast between dancers, male dancers having more restricted upper body movements whereas the women have more of a free upper body. The context of Ghost Dances is based on powerful, political statement of human rights and how there are contrasting ways in which people live their lives, many suffering. This is shown through the contrast used with dancers. In the piece, some are re-living the happiest moments in their life before they die, whilst others are living the inhumane treatment that many occur around the world.   In this piece, Christopher Bruce works closely with the music in order to help portray the stimulus. He uses Folk music in the piece. Traditionally, "folk music fuelled both cultural spring and protest" (Foyer, 2015), and Bruce wanting the "wonderful music" to show people caught ...

Choreographic Devices And Motif Development (4)

Image
I'm using choreographic devices like creating and developing contrasting motifs that come from my stimulus of the protest against war and fight for peace. Christopher Bruce,  "combines elements of the varied styles"  ([Martha Bremser and Lorna Sanders] 2011) of  dance in motifs, and brings them together to create a contrasting mixture which emphasises the movement. Prezi website mentions that Bruce highlights themes and creates emotional intensity by using repeated motif development, ([Clare Ellis], 2022). Bruce also shows awareness of social and ecological issues through his pieces. ([Martha Bremser and Lorna Sanders], 2011). I have created motifs with different styles and I think repeating and developing them will help to create more depth to my piece and clearly highlight ,similarly,  the social issues of war.  In an interview with Christopher Bruce, (on the Rambert website),  Bruce mentions how its sometimes more effective to have simple elements...

A Look Into My Chosen Practitioner (3)

Image
"Shadows" I have chosen the choreographer Christopher Bruce as an inspiration for the style of movement I want in my piece. Bruce uses a mixture of ballet and contemporary in his movement. He emphasises the contemporary side of his style with the use of lower back and more grounded positions such as plies and floorwork. However, he uses the long lines and high extensions used in ballet technique in order to complement the grounded levels.  "Ghost Dances" Rambert  I was initially attracted to Christopher       Bruce's style when watching the  piece,         "Shadows"  performed by Phoenix Dance Theatre. I noticed the use of mixture between low level lunges and floorwork, as well as high   energy travelling movements. I also saw that through his choreography,   he is able to tell a story, and is able to show distraught and fear through   the use of arm and leg gestures. In the same way, I...
